Services for Students
Studying in Australia

Working

All initial student visas are granted with the condition of 'No Work.' However, you can apply for permission to work once you have commenced your course of study in Australia.

If you are granted permission to work as a student (condition 8105), a new visa label will be put in your passport, and you may:

  • work for a maximum of 20 hours a week during the term, not including work that is a formal registered part of your course; and
  • unlimited hours during recognised vacation periods.

For further details of Student Visa Types (Subclasses) and Conditions, please visit www.immi.gov.au/study/visas/

You can apply online for a student visa with permission to work. However, your college or university must notify the department electronically to confirm that you have commenced your course. For further information on electronic visas, please see Online Services - Students www.immi.gov.au/e_visa/students.htm

Tax File Number (TFN)

You need to obtain a Tax File Number (like a social security number) to work in Australia. You can apply for a tax file number online if you are a temporary visitor and have a visa that allows you the right to work in Australia. For further information, visit the Australia Tax Office website: www.ato.gov.au/
